A Bid to Chart the Shrinking Financial Prospects of Pre-Owned Aircrafts

Sandhills Global has officially published the results from its latest report, which reveals that pre-owned aircraft asking prices are actually trending down across all categories.

Going by the available details, the stated report would go on to cover used jets, piston single aircraft, turboprop aircraft, and Robinson piston helicopters in Sandhills’ marketplaces. More on that would reveal how inventory levels, on the other hand, have decreased or remained largely flat in all surveyed categories.

Like in any other Sandhills report, this one also deployed the company’s proprietary Sandhills Equipment Value Index (EVI), which both buyers and sellers can bank upon to monitor equipment markets and maximize returns on acquisition, liquidation, and related business decisions. Markedly enough, the Sandhills EVI data includes equipment available in auction and retail markets, as well as model-year equipment actively in use.

Talk about the given report on a slightly deeper level, it packs together detailed analysis of asking values and inventory trends in used aircraft markets, along with comprehensive charts that help readers visualize the data. Furthermore, it does the work of describing and quantifying important trends in buying and selling of used jet, piston single, turboprop, and Robinson piston helicopter aircraft.

From a global standpoint, used jet inventory levels decreased by 5.88% month over month in December, but at the same time, they went up by 10.75% year over year, thus maintaining a sideways trend. The used large jet category showed the most substantial M/M inventory decrease at 11.55%, whereas on the other hand, used light jet inventory increased the most YOY at 18.59%.

If we focus just on December, used jet asking prices increased 0.95% M/M in December. Having said so, they fell by an estimated 5.29% YOY and are still understood be on a downwards trajectory. Used large jet asking prices, in particular, led M/M increases compared to other categories, up by 1.52%. This same category, when assessed on YOY basis, was deemed to be down by 4.82%.

The global lowdown on used Robinson piston helicopters also showed a shrinking inventory. You see, the inventory in this market went down by a substantial rate of 24.59%, as compared to year-ago levels. Apart from that, asking values decreased by 8.05% M/M, and if the provided data is to be trusted, they are still trending downwards. Asking values were also 7.1% lower than December 2023 values.

Next up, we must dig into the pricing levels of used piston single aircraft across US and Canada. In these given locations, inventory levels of used piston single aircraft, across Sandhills marketplaces, fell 4.83% M/M during December and are still trending down. On a YOY basis, the same Inventory would drop by 8.02%.

Another US and Canada-focused study was conducted in the context of used turboprop aircraft. The results would reveal that, following a 6-month-long upward inventory trend, used turboprop aircraft inventory levels dipped 3.26% lower M/M in December. The same inventory, when assessed on YOY basis, would go up by 11.26% and is still trending up. Almost like an inverse effect, used turboprop asking prices have been trending down for months and posted slight decreases of 0.62% M/M and 0.06% YOY during December.

“We’ve seen inventory growth slowing down,” said Brant Washburn, Manager at the Controller Department. “But there is still solid transactional volume. As always, pricing in the aircraft market is key to staying competitive.”

In case you weren’t aware, the Sandhills Equipment Value Index (EVI) happens to be a critical determinant of the estimated market values of used assets. In essence, EVI covera sectors like construction, agricultural, commercial trucking, and aviation industries represented by Sandhills Global marketplaces, including Controller.com, AuctionTime.com, TractorHouse.com, MachineryTrader.com, TruckPaper.com, and other industry-specific equipment platforms.
