SpaceX Sets Its Sights on the U.S. Wireless Market with Starlink Mobile

The company plans to combine satellites and small ground-based cells to challenge Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile and expand mobile connectivity across the country.

Hawthorne, California, 10 August 2026 – SpaceX is preparing to take a bigger role in the U.S. wireless market as it develops a Starlink-based mobile service that could put it in direct competition with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. The company is looking to combine its satellite network with small ground-based cellular stations to create a new approach to mobile connectivity.

The plan was outlined during SpaceX’s first earnings call as a public company on August 4. The company said it is working toward a hybrid wireless network designed to provide mobile coverage in areas where traditional cellular networks can struggle, particularly rural and remote locations.

Traditional wireless networks depend heavily on large cell towers that cover specific geographic areas. Building and maintaining these towers can be expensive, especially in locations with relatively few customers. SpaceX is exploring a different model by using smaller cellular stations that can be installed alongside existing Starlink broadband equipment.

The approach could allow SpaceX to build a wider mobile network without relying entirely on the large tower infrastructure used by established wireless companies. Starlink equipment is already installed at homes and businesses in many areas, creating a potential foundation for additional connectivity services.

Satellites would provide another important part of the network. Starlink already has technology that allows compatible phones to connect directly to satellites in areas without traditional cellular coverage. The company plans to launch next-generation Starlink Mobile V2 satellites beginning in 2027, which are expected to significantly increase network capacity.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has indicated that the combination of newer satellites and additional spectrum could substantially improve the performance of Starlink’s existing direct-to-device service. The company expects the expanded system to provide stronger connectivity and greater capacity as the technology develops.

The opportunity is particularly significant in areas where traditional cellular coverage remains limited. Large portions of rural America, mountain regions, national parks, and other remote locations can still experience weak or nonexistent mobile signals. SpaceX sees these areas as an important starting point for its wireless ambitions.

The company is aiming for more than simply filling coverage gaps. SpaceX has indicated that it wants Starlink Mobile to become a broader wireless service capable of competing for customers currently served by major carriers.

A major part of that strategy is spectrum. SpaceX acquired 65 megahertz of wireless spectrum from EchoStar, giving the company additional resources for developing its terrestrial mobile network. Combined with the spectrum it already uses through its relationship with T-Mobile, the company has a larger foundation for expanding its wireless capabilities.

The U.S. wireless market represents a major commercial opportunity. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has said the company expects to compete for customers in a market estimated at around $600 billion annually.

For consumers, the potential arrival of another major wireless provider could eventually mean more choices in mobile services. However, SpaceX has not yet announced final pricing for a standalone Starlink Mobile consumer service. The company will also need to establish customer support, billing systems, retail channels, and broad device compatibility before it can operate like a traditional wireless carrier.

Competing in major cities could present another challenge. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile have spent decades building dense networks designed to handle large numbers of users in urban and suburban areas. Matching their speed, reliability, and capacity will require SpaceX to expand its ground-based infrastructure significantly.

Spectrum capacity will also remain important. The three established carriers hold substantially more spectrum than SpaceX currently controls, giving them an advantage when it comes to serving large numbers of customers simultaneously.

The next major milestone will be the rollout of the next-generation Starlink satellites in 2027. The introduction of consumer pricing and early customer numbers will also provide a clearer indication of how quickly Starlink Mobile can move from an ambitious technology project into a serious wireless competitor.

SpaceX’s entry into mobile connectivity could mark a significant shift in the relationship between satellite and terrestrial communications. Instead of treating satellite networks simply as a backup for areas without cellular service, the company is attempting to combine space-based and ground-based systems into a single wireless network.

As the telecommunications industry continues to evolve, the competition between traditional cellular networks and satellite connectivity is likely to become more closely connected. SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile plans could give consumers another option while pushing established carriers to continue improving coverage, capacity, and service.

The success of the strategy will ultimately depend on how quickly SpaceX can expand its network, secure sufficient spectrum, develop consumer products, and deliver reliable service at a competitive price. If those pieces come together, Starlink Mobile could become one of the most closely watched new entrants in the U.S. telecommunications market.
