GISTDA: Advancing Thailand’s Strategic Space and Geospatial Capabilities

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) is driving Thailand’s transformation into a leading space and geospatial power in Southeast Asia. Operating under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, GISTDA serves as the nation’s primary hub for satellite operations, earth observation, and space-based intelligence. Through the development of sovereign, in-house capabilities, Thailand is strengthening technological independence while enhancing national resilience and economic security.

At the heart of this advancement is THEOS-2, Thailand’s most advanced Earth-observation satellite, equipped with high-resolution, sub-meter imagery that serves as a high-definition “Eye in the Sky” for monitoring surface changes across agricultural landscapes, terrestrial and maritime ecosystems, and rapidly evolving urban environments. Beyond routine observation, satellites play a vital role in supporting critical national operations such as disaster management and emergency response. Backed by over two decades of expertise built within GISTDA, satellite data is now accessible and actionable across multiple sectors, driving meaningful contributions to national missions.

GISTDA goes beyond satellite imaging by transforming raw data into actionable geospatial intelligence. Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI), advanced analytics, and integrated national databases, the agency delivers real-time situational awareness and predictive insights. These capabilities strengthen inter-agency coordination, support strategic defense planning, and enhance preparedness during national emergencies such as floods, wildfires, and transboundary environmental threats.

Looking ahead, GISTDA is building a sustainable space ecosystem to position Thailand as a regional hub for space services. Key initiatives include the development of a Spaceport in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), capacity building in Satellite Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT), and partnerships with local startups and international collaborators. This strategy reduces reliance on foreign technologies while cultivating a strong domestic aerospace industry and high-value workforce.

As a committed regional partner, GISTDA collaborates with organizations across Asia, Europe, and North America, contributing to ASEAN cooperation and Indo-Pacific stability.
Thailand stands at the forefront of regional collaboration, actively sharing cutting-edge satellite data and pioneering research to power transformative initiatives across Southeast Asia, from safeguarding food security and tracking climate patterns to tackling the unpredictable challenges of transboundary disaster risk reduction.

Guided by principles of responsible and sustainable space operations, GISTDA aligns with international standards in space debris mitigation and long-term satellite lifecycle management. By integrating space intelligence with sustainable development goals, the agency reinforces the connection between national security and environmental stewardship.

Through innovation, collaboration, and sovereign capability development, GISTDA is ensuring that Thailand not only participates in the global space sector but leads with confidence, resilience, and strategic vision for the future.
